Lots of fun stuff this week, starting with Pee-wee's Playhousecollected in a new boxed set and looking better than ever. It's not just one of the best kid's shows of all time. I consider it one of the best TV shows of all timefull stop.

Pee-wee's Playhouse, Grade A: Few Saturday-morning programs have resonated so loudly with both young and old. Paul Reubens' childlike performance as Pee-wee remains as energetic and fun as it was when it won 22 Emmy Awards in the late '80s. That's because the show is a mix of smart and silly humor that creates pure entertainment joy.
For people of a certain age, getting a collection of the Pee-wee Herman cult-favorite series "Pee-wee's Playhouse" will give them, ahem, a Mekka Lekka high. This fine set brings together all 45 episodes, now remastered and in high-definition, the Christmas special and a boatload of new special features -- from cast interviews to featurettes on the puppets and music -- that will keep you planted in your own personal Chairry for hours. Zach Braff writes, stars and directs in this strong comic drama about a man trying to embrace adulthood.
The only problem was that DVD release was not the whole of the series. With so many guest stars if you blink you are sure to miss one. This special episode was broadcast during prime time, where the series was a Saturday morning production.
Riding the retro wave, Pee-wee Herman and friends look better-than-ever, fully remastered from the original film elements in painstaking detail by the team at Shout! While I've been enjoying Pee-wee's Playhouse here in my office for some late-night viewing, I did show the girls a couple of episodes and found Addie my oldest quite captivated at age 5. I wouldn't recommend a full-on binge for the children of I limit screen time, anywaybut Pee-wee's Playhouse is a ton of fun, and a Rock Father-approved addition to my Holiday Wish Guide.
While Pee-wee Herman was a child-like figure, it was hard to figure if children would want to experience him. His HBO special was aimed at adults who enjoyed juvenile humor. But CBS took a chance and put him on the air.
The special is a variety show that features a number of celebrities of the time as well as several musical numbers, educational segments, and segments commonly found in the show: a secret word "year"connect the dots with the Magic Screen, a visit from the King of Cartoons, a clay animation Penny cartoon, etc. Charo performs " Feliz Navidad ". It is Christmas Eve of and Pee-wee, with the help of his robot pal Conkyhas spent a great deal of time creating an abnormally large Christmas list for Santa. Only after Miss Yvonne stops by the Playhouse wearing a new hairdo and a beautiful Christmas dress to drop off a Christmas fruitcake does Pee-wee realize that he hasn't yet decorated for the holidays.
